Card infrastructure provider Rain has launched the Agentic Payments Alliance — an industry coalition meant to develop standards for agent-driven commerce and payments: payments triggered not by humans but by AI agents. Founding members per the press release include Visa, Mastercard, Circle, and Fiserv — and the Solana Foundation.
Who Sits at the Table
The list combines the two major card networks, one of the largest regulated stablecoin issuers, and one of the largest payment processors — and, with the Solana Foundation, a blockchain organization. If this coalition defines how agents identify themselves, respect limits, and settle, it touches the rails that agent commerce will later run on.
For Solana, the seat is consistent: the chain already provides the building blocks in question — the payment protocol x402 under the Linux Foundation, the services marketplace pay.sh, native agent spending with limits, and with Mastercard’s Agent Pay and MoneyGram’s ramps the connections to the classic payments world. Rain itself is no stranger on Solana — the provider carries Western Union’s Stablecard.
The status deserves framing: a coalition develops standards — it is not a product and not a protocol. What becomes binding is decided by the specifications it publishes.
