Western Union Launches Stablecard: Visa Card on a Solana Stablecoin in 37 Markets
Western Union and Rain launch the Stablecard: a Visa card based on Western Union's own stablecoin USDPT, which runs on Solana and is issued by Anchorage Digital Bank. Live in 37 markets, with over 60 targeted by the end of 2026.
What Happened
Western Union has launched the Stablecard together with Rain — a Visa card based on Western Union’s own stablecoin USDPT. USDPT is issued by Anchorage Digital Bank on Solana, is redeemable 1:1 for US dollars per Western Union, and fully backed by reserves. The card launches in 37 markets and works anywhere Visa is accepted — around 175 million merchant locations, per the announcement.
How the Card Works
- Wallet + card: The Stablecard combines a USDPT wallet with a Visa card; payments come directly from the stablecoin balance.
- Mobile payments: Apple Pay and Google Pay are supported.
- Access: Identity verification is mandatory; no credit check or minimum balance is required. Fees may apply for ATM withdrawals, currency conversion, and local services.
- Expansion: Per Western Union, the card is set to reach more than 60 markets by the end of 2026.
Why It Matters
Western Union is one of the world’s largest money transfer providers — the company issuing its own stablecoin on Solana and wiring it directly into the Visa network moves stablecoin payments out of the crypto niche and into existing payment infrastructure. The news joins a series of payments moves on Solana — most recently KSNET’s memorandum on Solana Pay integration in Korea.

- How USDPT circulation and usage develop after launch
- Whether more payment giants follow the “own stablecoin + card network” pattern
