Private Key

The secret cryptographic key that grants access to a wallet and signs transactions. Whoever holds it controls the assets.

Private Key

The private key is a wallet’s secret key. It signs transactions — proving to the network that you are authorized to move the assets.

Why it matters so much

Whoever holds the private key controls the assets. There is no bank and no support desk that can reset it.

Handling it safely

  • Never share it: no legitimate service ever asks for your private key.
  • Don’t store it in plaintext digitally: no screenshots, no cloud notes.
  • Relationship to the seed phrase: a wallet’s private keys are derived from the seed phrase. The seed phrase is the higher-level backup.

Hardware wallets keep the private key in a shielded chip so that it never leaves the device.
