SIMD-550: Solana Proposal Aims to Cut SOL Inflation Twice as Fast

Helius brings SIMD-550 to Solana governance: the annual disinflation rate would rise from 15% to 30%. SOL would reach its 1.5% terminal inflation about three years earlier — and roughly 18.9 million SOL fewer would be issued.

What Happened

Solana governance is weighing SIMD-550, a proposal to double the annual disinflation rate from 15% to 30% — brought by Helius as an updated version of the earlier SIMD-411. In practice, SOL would reach its long-run terminal inflation of 1.5% about three years earlier: in roughly 2.8 years (H1 2029) instead of 5.7 years (H1 2032). Over six years, around 18.9 million SOL less would be issued — about $1.51 billion in reduced emissions at current prices.

What Changes Technically

The proposal calls it the simplest possible protocol change: only a single parameter is adjusted, while the emission curve itself stays the same. That leanness is what sets SIMD-550 apart from the more complex, ultimately stalled SIMD-228, which proposed a market-based emission model.

The Trade-Off

Less emission means less dilution for existing holders — but also lower staking rewards and less income for validators who rely on inflation. That is where the debate runs: holders wary of dilution on one side, validators whose ongoing yield drops on the other. For how staking works on Solana in general: Solana staking guide.

Staker Governance

SIMD-411, the predecessor, sat idle until tooling was ready that lets not just validators but also stakers take part in the vote. SIMD-550 aims to use exactly this broader governance.

Note: This is reporting, not investment advice. Whether and how the proposal is adopted is up to governance; a price effect is not guaranteed.

What to Watch

  • Whether SIMD-550 gathers the needed support across staker and validator governance
  • How validators respond to the falling emission income
  • Whether the proposal — unlike SIMD-228 and SIMD-411 — makes it to a vote this time
