AWS Lets Publishers Charge AI Bots in Stablecoins — x402 on Solana and Base

AWS WAF can now monetize AI bot traffic via x402: publishers set per-request prices, bots pay in USDC. Settlement runs through Coinbase's x402 Facilitator — Solana is one of the supported chains alongside Base.

What Happened

AWS added a capability to its firewall service AWS WAF (in front of CloudFront) that lets publishers charge AI bots for accessing content — instead of just blocking them. Payment runs over the x402 protocol; Solana is one of the supported settlement chains alongside Base. AWS announced the feature on 15 June 2026.

How It Works

When a monetization rule matches, AWS WAF returns an HTTP 402 “Payment Required” with a machine-readable price manifest (JSON in x402 format): price in USDC, supported chains, destination wallet, timeout. The bot submits a signed payment authorization; AWS verifies it, serves the content, and leaves on-chain settlement to a facilitator — here Coinbase’s x402 Facilitator. Prices can be set by path, bot category, or verification tier, without changing any code at the origin.

Why It Matters

According to AWS, AI bot traffic already makes up more than 50% of web traffic for many providers, and AI crawlers are growing more than 300% year-over-year. The feature turns that traffic from a blocking problem into a potential revenue stream — and brings machine-to-machine payments to the infrastructure edge of one of the largest cloud providers. For Solana, being included as a settlement chain potentially means broader x402 usage. For how x402 and agent payments work on Solana: AI agents & x402 on Solana.

Note: This is reporting, not investment advice. Direct Stripe integration and the Machine Payments Protocol (MPP) are “coming soon” per AWS.

What to Watch
