Routing Failure at TeraSwitch: 29 Percent of Stake Briefly Offline — Solana Kept Running

A routing failure at hosting provider TeraSwitch took around 90 Solana validators with roughly 28.8 percent of stake offline for about half an hour. Blocks and finality continued — the critical 33.34 percent threshold was never reached.

What Happened

On August 12, routing failed at hosting provider TeraSwitch. The consequence: around 90 Solana validators holding roughly 28.8 percent of staked SOL were temporarily unable to vote. After about 33 to 40 minutes, the condition was resolved. The numbers come from Jacob Creech, VP of Technology at the Solana Foundation, and were confirmed in the Solana changelog of August 13.

What Held — and Why

The network kept producing blocks and finalizing transactions throughout. The reason is consensus arithmetic: things become critical only when more than 33.34 percent of stake goes offline simultaneously — at that point finality can no longer be reached. At 28.8 percent, the outage stayed below that threshold: 597 of 699 voting validators kept voting. Validators in the Foundation’s delegation program (SFDP) were unaffected.

Separated cleanly, that means: this was an outage at an infrastructure provider, not a consensus or protocol problem — and under real stress, the network behaved exactly as the model prescribes.

What the Incident Still Shows

The other half of the truth: that a single hosting provider can take almost 29 percent of stake offline is a real concentration finding. Had the share been higher, finality would have stalled. The practical lesson for operators is diversification — across providers, networks (ASNs), and regions.

Protocol work continued in parallel: the same week’s changelog lists, among other things, the slot time reduction on testnet and the Agave 4.2 schedule.
