Switchboard Shuts Down Its Oracle Operations: Support Ended on September 25
Switchboard Technology Labs is winding down operations. All implementations are deprecated, and support ended on September 25. Per Switchboard, users should immediately migrate to other oracles such as Pyth or RedStone.
What Happened
Switchboard Technology Labs announced on September 18 that it is winding down operations. Support ended on September 25, 2026. According to Switchboard, all implementations are now deprecated. Users are to migrate to other oracle providers immediately; Switchboard names Pyth and RedStone as examples. Contributors said they would remain available for one more week to help with technical migration on a best-effort basis.
Switchboard had operated as an oracle on Solana and other chains since 2021. The project became known for a feed builder that let anyone create their own data feeds without permission.
The Reasons, per Switchboard
- Less demand for oracles: AI makes it easier to build one’s own oracles and has reduced pricing power. The bear market has cut the number of new chain launches and shrunk budgets.
- Direct data access: protocols increasingly license data sources directly rather than through oracle networks. Switchboard cites Hyperliquid’s partnership with S&P as an example.
- Costs and exploits: fast, high-fidelity infrastructure comes with significant operational and capital demands. Per Switchboard, the decision followed recent exploits; the announcement gives no details on them.
Why an Oracle Shutdown Matters
An oracle brings data from outside the blockchain onchain, above all prices. Lending protocols, perps exchanges, and vaults use these prices to calculate collateral values and trigger liquidations. If feeds stop updating, a program that keeps reading them works with stale values. The announcement does not say which Solana protocols were still using Switchboard feeds at the cutoff. How DeFi protocols on Solana are structured is covered in DeFi on Solana.
